Ticket Types & Flexibility

Flex, Saver, or Super Saver? How to choose the right option for your journey.

Planning Security vs. Spontaneity

Choosing the right ticket type determines how flexible you are on your travel day. While some options offer maximum freedom, others are bound to specific train numbers. Here you'll learn what you need to know before booking.

The 20-Minute Rule

Important for all Saver fare travelers: If your train is expected to arrive 20 minutes or more late at your destination, you may immediately switch to other trains. The original train binding is automatically lifted in this case.

Additional Benefits

In combination with a BahnCard, you often receive additional benefits such as the City Ticket, which covers your journey to the station by local public transport - regardless of the ticket type chosen.

Understanding Train Binding (Zugbindung)

Train binding is a key concept when traveling with Deutsche Bahn's discounted fares. It means that your ticket is only valid for the exact train connection printed on it - including the specific date, departure time, and train number.

Important: If you miss your train with a bound ticket, you may not be able to use the next available train without purchasing a new ticket or paying a difference.

When Train Binding is Lifted

  • 20+ minute delay expected: If your booked train is running late and you would arrive more than 20 minutes behind schedule, you can take any alternative train.
  • Train cancellation: If your booked train is cancelled, you're automatically entitled to use other connections.
  • Missed connection: If a delay on your first train causes you to miss a connecting train, the binding is lifted for the entire journey.

Pro Tips for Ticket Selection

  • Book early for Super Saver: These fares are limited and sell out quickly on popular routes. Book 2-4 weeks in advance for the best prices.
  • Use the DB Navigator app: Get real-time updates about delays and alternative connections, especially important when traveling with bound tickets.
  • Consider journey complexity: For trips with multiple connections, a Flex fare may be worth the extra cost due to the risk of missed connections.
  • Check for special offers: Deutsche Bahn regularly offers promotional Super Saver fares at even lower prices during special campaigns.
