How to Cancel Your BahnCard

Meet the 6-week deadline, stop auto-renewal

The BahnCard auto-renews — unless you actively cancel. The deadline is 6 weeks before the end of the contract term. Miss it, and the BahnCard runs for another 12 months at the regular price. Here's how the online cancellation works in 3 minutes — and when a written postal cancellation is the better choice.

Online cancellation step by step

  1. 1

    Check the deadline

6 weeks before the renewal date, the cancellation must reach DB. The date is printed on your BahnCard or shown in your customer account under "Contract term".

  2. 2

    Login to DB customer account

At bahn.de top-right "Login" → email + password. If trouble: "Forgot password" or SMS-code login.

  3. 3

    Open BahnCard management

In the menu "My Cards & Tickets" → "BahnCard" → click your active BahnCard.

  4. 4

    Trigger cancellation

"Options" or "Manage" → click "Cancel BahnCard". Review the confirmation page and confirm "Cancel now".

  5. 5

    Save the confirmation

DB sends a confirmation email immediately with the cancellation date. Save or print it — important for follow-up questions.

Written cancellation by post

If you prefer not to cancel online — or want a stamped cancellation confirmation — a simple letter is sufficient:

To: DB BahnCard Service

Postfach 22 00

60265 Frankfurt am Main

Subject: Cancellation BahnCard no. [your BahnCard number]

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hereby cancel my BahnCard [type, e.g. 50] with number [BahnCard number] effective the regular expiry date [date, printed on the card] in due time.

Please confirm the cancellation in writing by email to [your email].

Best regards,

[Signature + name in block letters]

Tip: Send by Einwurf-Einschreiben (drop-in registered mail) — ~€3.10 at the post office, but you have proof that the cancellation arrived on time. Regular registered mail isn't enough, because DB won't sign in person.

Avoid automatic renewal

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Missed deadline (<6 weeks before expiry)
  • ✗ Only email to service center (not reliable)
  • ✗ Cancelled payment method → DB still bills
  • ✗ Cancellation on behalf of another person

Do it right

  • ✓ Set a 7-week reminder in your calendar
  • ✓ Cancel online via customer account — immediate confirmation
  • ✓ Save confirmation email (PDF in "BahnCard" folder)
  • ✓ For postal: drop-in registered mail

Before you cancel: Is a downgrade worthwhile?

If you travel less, you don't necessarily need to cancel. A switch to a smaller BahnCard may suffice:

  • BahnCard 50 → BahnCard 25: Discount drops from 50% to 25%, price from ~€245 to ~€60. Pays off from >4 long-distance trips/year.
  • BahnCard 100 → BahnCard 50: From ~€4,700 to ~€245. Makes sense at <80% BC100 utilization.
  • Regular BahnCard → My BahnCard (Youth): If under 27: 50% cheaper, same service. Switch on next term renewal.

Pro tips

1

Cancel Probe-BahnCard immediately after purchase: You get the full 3-month discount, but must stop the auto-renewal in time. Cancellation possible right after purchase — still applies only at term end.

2

No right to extraordinary cancellation on price hike: DB may adjust prices. You can only cancel at the regular end date, not extraordinarily.

3

Revoke SEPA mandate separately: Cancelling the BahnCard does not automatically revoke the SEPA mandate. If in doubt, ask the bank to delete the mandate.

4

Re-entry is always possible: You can buy a new BahnCard anytime — Probe-BahnCard even with discounted entry (if you haven't had one for more than 12 months).

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to cancel my BahnCard?

The cancellation period is 6 weeks before the end of the contract term (for annual BahnCards). DB must receive the cancellation in written form at least 6 weeks before the renewal date. For Probe-BahnCards, the period is only 4 weeks before the 3-month term ends.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

The BahnCard renews automatically for another year at the regular price. Early cancellation is not possible — even if you're not using the card. Tip: immediately after purchase, set a reminder 7 weeks before expiry in your calendar.

Can I cancel the BahnCard mid-year?

No. Early cancellation is only possible in exceptional cases (e.g. moving abroad with deregistration, death of the holder). Normal cancellation applies only at the regular termination date after the 6-week deadline is met.

What's the easiest way to cancel online?

Via your DB customer account on bahn.de: Login → "My Cards & Tickets" → select BahnCard → "Options" → "Cancel BahnCard". The cancellation is confirmed immediately and you receive an email with the cancellation date. Alternative: in writing by post to DB BahnCard Service, Postfach 22 00, 60265 Frankfurt.

Do I need to provide a reason?

No. DB does not require a reason — neither online nor in writing. A simple statement "I hereby cancel my BahnCard effective [date]" is legally sufficient.

I bought the BahnCard for someone else — who can cancel?

Only the person named as holder in the BahnCard contract can cancel — not the buyer. For gift BahnCards, the recipient must cancel (or issue a power of attorney to you).
