Night Train Guide

Nightjet: Overnight to Vienna, Paris, Rome

ÖBB night trains 2026 — cabins, prices, best routes

The Nightjet is Europe's answer to short-haul flights — travel relaxed overnight without booking a hotel. ÖBB operates Europe's largest night-train network and has expanded massively in 2024/25: new routes to Paris, more Comfort Plus cars, higher frequency. This guide shows which cabin suits which traveler type and how to find the cheapest "Sparschiene" contingents.

Important: Nightjet is an ÖBB product, not DB

  • • Booking at nightjet.com is almost always cheaper than DB
  • BahnCard does not apply — 25/50% discount only works on DB trips
  • • Passenger rights run through ÖBB (not DB) — delay-claim form from ÖBB customer service
  • • ÖBB Vorteilscard offers Nightjet discounts — pays off from ~3 Nightjet trips/year

Pro tips

1

Book directly at nightjet.com: Not via the DB website — often 30–50% more expensive there. The ÖBB website accepts credit cards, has an English version and shows all contingents transparently.

2

Cheaper on weekdays: Tue/Wed/Thu departures almost always have the most Sparschiene contingents. Friday evening toward Vienna is the most expensive.

3

Couchette is the sweet spot: For €20 more than seat car you get real sleep quality. The difference to sitting upright is huge — sleeper only makes sense if you need privacy.

4

Interrail pass works on Nightjet: With 1st-class pass even in sleeper, with 2nd-class pass in couchette. Reservation fee €10–30 applies but still cheaper than single ticket.

5

Small bag is enough: Sleep mask, earplugs, toiletries, thin pullover (A/C!), plug adapter per destination country. Large luggage fits under the bed or in the corridor luggage racks.

Book Nightjet directly with ÖBB

nightjet.com shows all Sparschiene contingents. Direct booking saves €20–50 vs. DB resale — and you see the available cabins immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who operates the Nightjet — DB or ÖBB?

The Nightjet is a product of ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), not Deutsche Bahn. This matters for booking, passenger rights and BahnCard use. DB does sell Nightjets as a reseller — but usually more expensive than the ÖBB website directly. When booking, always compare on nightjet.com.

Does my BahnCard apply on the Nightjet?

No. BahnCard 25/50 applies only to DB trips. On the Nightjet you pay full price without BahnCard discount. Only exception: combi-tickets where the German segment is booked as DB — there BahnCard applies on that part.

Which cabin should I book?

Seat car (from €29.90): cheapest, but you sleep in a 6-seat compartment. Couchette (from €49.90): 6 or 4-bunk compartment with simple bunks, pillow + blanket included, shared with strangers. Sleeper (from €69.90): 1–3 person compartment with bed, washbasin, privacy. Comfort Plus (from €139.90): shower/WC inside the compartment, breakfast. Rule: couchette for backpackers, sleeper useful from 8h+ trips.

Which Nightjet routes depart from Germany?

Main routes: Hamburg → Vienna (via Berlin), Berlin → Zurich/Vienna/Paris (new 2024), Munich → Rome/Venice/Paris/Salzburg, Düsseldorf/Cologne → Vienna. Plus partial routes abroad (Amsterdam–Innsbruck). The network has been growing continuously — new Berlin↔Paris direct launched winter 2025/26.

Is the Nightjet financially worth it?

When considering hotel + train together: yes. You save a hotel night (€80–150) and travel at the same time. A couchette Hamburg → Vienna from €49.90 + hotel-night savings = usually cheaper than a day trip + hotel. Plus you gain travel time since you sleep through the journey.

What's included in a Nightjet ticket?

Seat car: seat + luggage rack, nothing else. Couchette: blanket, pillow, earplugs, sleep mask, breakfast (coffee + pastry). Sleeper: bedding + breakfast + welcome drink. Comfort Plus: shower in compartment, larger breakfast, free water/coffee. WiFi and power sockets available in all classes (quality varies).
