Flying from Munich (MUC) and want to take the train? The airport is directly connected to the Hauptbahnhof via the S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 — about 40 minutes. Here we explain the MVV zone system for the airport, ticket purchase, and all alternatives. As of 2026-06.
Note: As of 2026-06: MVV fares and zone layout may change in 2026/2027. Please verify current prices and zones on mvv-muenchen.de before buying your ticket.
How do I get from Munich Hbf to the airport?
There are four routes, all terminating directly at the airport — no transfer:
S-Bahn S1 (West route)
Runs from Munich Hbf via Neufahrn and Freising to the airport. Ideal for travellers from western Munich and commuters from Freising. As of 2026-06.
S-Bahn S8 (East route)
Runs from Munich Hbf via Ismaning to the airport. Fastest connection for travellers from eastern Munich and airport commuters. As of 2026-06.
Lufthansa Express Bus
Direct connection between Munich Hbf and the airport, operated by Lufthansa. For a fee, often bundled into frequent-flyer programmes. As of 2026-06.
Taxi / rental car
Taxis wait at the airport taxiway, rental cars at the terminal. Journey time 30-50 minutes depending on traffic, costs variable. As of 2026-06.
MVV zone system at the airport
Since the MVV tariff reform 2025, Munich Airport lies in Zone M (outer boundary). This means:
- Inner zone (M-1, M-2): Munich city area including Hbf, Marienplatz, Hauptbahnhof.
- Middle zones: Surrounding municipalities, neighbouring districts.
- Zone M (outer boundary): Airport tariff zone — automatically added to the ticket when the destination is the airport.
Example: A ticket Munich Hbf → Airport covers zones M-1 (city area) to M (outer boundary) and costs more than a pure inner-zone ticket. Current zone layout on mvv-muenchen.de. As of 2026-06.
Tickets for the airport route
You have three ticket options — depending on length of stay and usage frequency:
Single ticket
Valid for one journey in one direction. Price depends on zone count and origin station. As of 2026-06, current prices on mvv-muenchen.de.
Day ticket
Valid all day for unlimited rides in the chosen area. Worthwhile for round trips on the same day plus inner-city rides. As of 2026-06.
Deutschlandticket
€58 monthly, valid on the entire MVV network including airport. Ideal for long-term stays. Requires German residence. As of 2026-06.
Frequency & journey time
Frequency
S1 and S8 run every 10 minutes during the day, every 20 minutes in the evening. At night (about 1-4 am) at least one line runs every 40 minutes. As of 2026-06.
Journey time
Munich Hbf → Airport: about 40 minutes on S1 or S8. With transfer to regional trains it can be 35 minutes but requires good connection luck. As of 2026-06.
Tips for travellers
Plan an early departure
Be at the airport 2 hours before domestic, 3 hours before international flights. With the S-Bahn from Hbf, that is roughly 3 hours from city centre — longer at peak times.
Luggage in the wagon
There are no reserved luggage spaces in the S-Bahn. Place suitcases in the multi-purpose area at the wagon end or between seats. Theft risk is low but watch valuables.
Consider connecting flights
Connecting at MUC is quick (compact airport), but plan 1.5 hours change time between train arrival and domestic connection. As of 2026-06.
